Chen Kun – China’s Most Handsome Actor

Name: Chen Kun
English name: Aloys Chen
Profession: Actor and singer
Birthdate: 1976-Feb-04
Height: 176cm
Weight: 65kg
Star sign: Aquarius
Chinese zodiac: Dragon
Blood type: B

Growing up poor

Among China’s young actors, Chen Kun stands out with his cool appearance. Because of the variety of roles he has played as well as his talents in both acting and singing, this handsome actor has become one of the most popular stars in China.

Chen was born in Southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality and grew up in a single-parent family. As the eldest of three boys in the family, he had been independent since childhood.

When he was still a high school student, Chen started working in his spare time to help his family. He worked as a typist in a printing house and a waiter in a nightclub. Hardships never depressed Chen, but strengthened him and left him optimistic, which later helped him in his acting.

A gifted singer, Chen’s talents were recognized by a music teacher who recommended him to the China National Song and Dance Ensemble in 1995. In 1996, Chen was admitted to the Beijing Film Academy, where his acting career started.

Chen described himself as lucky. “When I graduated from the Beijing Film Academy in 2000, I only expected to make a living through acting. But I have had many good opportunities,” he said.

“Many people complain a lot about life’s pressures, while I take a very calm attitude towards life. Enjoy life and enjoy work, that’s my motto.”

Filming in Tibet

Chen is currently shooting Song of Cloud and Water, an art film featuring love and patriotism during the Chinese revolutionary wars. In the leading role, Chen moves from teacher to military doctor.

“The film is a big challenge for me, as I have to portray the maturing process of the character over 20 years,” said Chen. As a lot of the film’s scenes are set in Tibet, Chen is also challenged physically by the high altitude.

After finishing the film, Chen expects to work with Li Shaohong, an established woman director, on another movie project this year.

Golden Horse

In the ongoing Golden Horse Film Festival, which opened in Taipei on November 4, Chen was nominated for best leading actor for A West Lake Moment, in which he played the role of a director and editor. He was picked for his portrayal of the inner world of a young man, who is seen as love-seeking and idealistic but not easily satisfied.

“The Golden Horse awards are among the highest in Asia, and I feel honored to be nominated. But I think there is little chance for me to win,” he said.

Speaking personally

Despite the praise he has received in the past few years, Chen still regards himself as an ordinary young person.

“I have some strong points, but I have many weak points as well. I’m different from many other people only because I’m in a special profession, which exposes my life to the public,” he commented.

“As a public figure, I try to keep a good image. But out of the public eye, I live an ordinary life, like other people my age.”

Rain – South Korean Pop Star

Rain listed in People’s 100 Most Beautiful

Rain (Real name: Jung Ji-Hoon, born on 25 June 1982 in Seoul) is a male Korean R&B and pop singer. He has become well-known throughout East and Southeast Asia — including Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, Mainland China, Vietnam and Thailand.

South Korean pop star Rain, a pan-Asian heartthrob, has become the first entertainer from his country to make People magazine’s annual “100 Most Beautiful People” list.

“I am very honoured. This will be a great boon to my efforts to raise public awareness of me in the United States,” Rain was quoted as saying on his agent’s website.

“I never expected this to happen to me. This is the best news for me this year.”

Since his debut in 2002 Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji-Hoon, has personified the “Korean Wave” of pop music, films and TV dramas sweeping across Asia.

In 2007, Rain topped Time Magazine’s online user poll, although he was not in the magazine’s actual list. He also made it into People’s 2007 list of the “Most Beautiful People” in the world.

Rain became interested in R&B and Hiphop dancing when he was in 6th grade. As a teenager, he was a member of a boy band called Fanclub. The group was short-lived, and soon disbanded. At that time Rain was having the hardest time of his life. His mother was sick, he had no money, he had a little sister to take care of and go to school. Yet he still pressed forward, always dancing, dreaming to become a singer. Rain then began auditioning for various talent agencies. In a CNN interview, however, he recalled being repeatedly rejected because of his looks: “In fact, I was told after one audition that my singing and dancing was great but I didn’t make it because I didn’t have double eyelids.”Finally, Rain entered an audition for Korean talent agency JYP Entertainment. Park Jin Young, the CEO of the agency, took a personal interest in Rain and accepted him as a trainee. During the early years of training, Rain was a backup dancer.
Finally, in 2002 he debuted with the album Bad Guy where he was introduced to the media through his stage or commercial name, Rain. In the album, a similarly-named single Bad Guy was a big hit. After his first album, he took time off from his career as a singer to star in the drama series, Sang Doo! Let’s Go To School. Following the success of his debut as singer and actor, Rain released his second album How to Avoid The Sun, and had another hit with the title song “Ways to Avoid the Sun.”

In 2004, he starred in another successful drama called “Full House“, which was one of the highest-rated Korean dramas of all time with ratings of over 30% for every episode. It was broadcasted in many other countries including the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, China, Japan, Taiwan and the U.S. Through Full House, Rain was recognized across Asia. His performance in the drama also won him the Best Actor Award at the KBS Acting Awards.

Since then, he and another gold medal winner, Guo Jingjing, often appeared at the public activities. They were better known in unison as Liang Jingjing (亮晶晶, the complex name of Tian and Guo, synonymous with the word for ‘sparkling’).

After belting his multiple Olympic medals, Tian Liang received numerous invitations to lend his name and face to corporate promotions. His resulting involvement in these activities, and perhaps other disputes with the national team, have led the national team to fire him after repeated warnings. In spite of this, however, Tian refused to cease his diving training but continued to practice with a provincial team. Not only did he maintain his diving standard, he furthermore managed to safeguard a medal at the following Chinese National Games. Although the public advocated his restoration to the national team following this event, the government did not concede. Tian has since then split his schedule between diving training and public activities. Finally on March 25, 2007, Tian announced his retirement as a diver.
